Special Topics: Modern Women, Modern Art
This course will investigate women as creators, subjects, and even objects in the visual arts of the nineteenth and twentieth century. Not only will we learn about under-represented female artists, we will also look at the ways women have had to redefine artistic education, apprenticeship, media, partnership, and even what it means to be an artist. Topics include: Victorine Meurent, Suzanne Valadon, Sonia Delaunay, Marie Laurencin, the women of the Soviet Avant-Garde, Georgia O'Keefe, Frida Kahlo, Helen Frankenthaler, and Lee Krasner.
