Special Topics: The Holy Land in Visual Culture: Architecture, Maps, Paintings, Photographs
Richly diverse, early modern visual images of Jerusalem are the focus of our studies of the culture of the Holy land. We will read biblical and extra-biblical accounts and will study ancient as well as early modern and contemporary sites. The visual sources we consult include architecture, maps, illustrated Bibles, Esther scrolls, marriage contracts, Torah curtains, paintings, illuminated manuscripts, prints, and photography. Comparisons with Christian and Islamic examples will deepen our knowledge of the universal significance of this region.
