Special Topics in the Humanities:
From Past to Present — Exploring Contemporary Art in Africa

3 Credit Seminar

This course provides an introduction to the contemporary arts of Africa in the wake of the independence movements of the mid 20th century. We will consider work in multiple mediums including painting, sculpture, digital art, performance, installation, and text. One of our primary goals is to track the interrelationships between artistic practices and pressing societal issues. We will also consider ways in which contemporary artists experiment with new and unconventional materials – metal, cow hide, bottle caps. In addition to lectures, readings, and class discussion, we will interact with some contemporary African artists. This course assumes no prior knowledge of African art and all are welcome to attend.

At the end of the course, it is expected that the student will have:

  1. gained familiarity with both material and non-material contemporary African art
  2. learned to easily identify contradictions related to concepts and ideas involved in contemporary African art
  3. identified qualities that make a contemporary art piece identifiable based on unique elements, styles, and trends
  4. recognized ways in which systems of culture, politics, power, sexuality, and proclivities affect interpretation of modern and contemporary African arts
  5. identified the effects of colonialism on modern and contemporary African arts.
