Around 720, an eighteen-year-old Buddhist monk named Hyecho set out on one of the most remarkable journeys in history: after leaving his native Korea, he traveled from China, to India, to Persia, and back to China in only three years. In this course, we will follow in his footsteps, encountering the Buddhist teachings and the Buddhist art that he discovered along the way. This is an experimental course, bringing together the study of Buddhist doctrine and Buddhist art in a single semester.
