Just as digital technologies and the Worldwide Web have changed our own ways of thinking and working, printing technology had a profound impact on early modern European cultures. This course investigates the implications of this media for the pictorial arts in Europe from 1450 until 1700. We will discuss artists' responses to the new opportunities that printing offered, as well as reactions from viewing publics to the varieties of books and images that became available. Estimated cost of materials: $50 or less. IV. 3
