The course looks in detail at a range of the archaeological sites which contribute most to our understanding of society in Greece between the Dark Age and Roman periods. In each case we will be exploring the layout and architectural features of excavated buildings, and investigating how they were used. Setting them within their wider cultural context, we also consider what the archaeological evidence tells us about the roles played by different kinds of sites, and in particular, about the lives of the people who once lived there. We begin with earlier, less complex sites and use a variety of archaeological methods to build towards an analysis of the different components of the built environment and topography of large, complex sites like Athens. We also consider how such sites developed through time in response to the changing needs and demands of their inhabitants.
