The course aims at covering in detail the archaeological techniques aimed at reconstructing human landscapes and settlement patterns. Particular attention is paid to systematic field walking as a fundamental tool to collect representative samples of archaeological sites. Beginning with fundamental strategic issues, such as survey intensity, surface visibility and formal spatial sampling, the course progressively examines the major areas of methodological debate in field surveys. Some of the themes considered are site definition, site vs. off-site scatters and especially the utility of artifact-level surveys. The course also examines a wide range of techniques of spatial analysis, from Thyssen polygons and nearest neighbor analysis to bias correction and site prediction tools. GIS-enabled approaches, such as viewshed or intervisibility analysis, and especially the use of trend surfaces conclude the course.
