This course draws upon a variety of art historical case studies—early modern, colonial, modern, and contemporary—to explore cultural contacts between Europe and India. Collectively, students will explore cultural exchange through a range of perspectives, such as post-colonial theory, technology, text-image analysis, “the copy,” the gift, and ritual. A range of theoretical readings from anthropology, art history, history, and cultural studies will prepare students to explore individually-designed research topics, culminating in a presentation and research paper. Estimated cost of materials: less than $50.
