This course is an introduction to gender issues in a wide range of art forms with special emphasis in the visual arts, music and literature. We will meet as a seminar once a week for a combination of lecture and discussion. Classes will be supplemented with required attendance at performances and museums in the Ann Arbor and Detroit area. Our goal throughout the term is to develop a critical appreciation of the arts and skills in writing about the arts. We will think about how performances of femininity, masculinity, and sexuality intersect with race, class and ethnicity and consider how these issues are produced and received by artists and audiences in the past and present. Writing assignments will include reports on performance and arts events as well as critical analyses. For those who are interested, there will be some opportunities for creative projects. Estimated cost of materials: $50 or more, but less than $100. Lab fee: $100. IV. 3, 4
